AN EVENING WITH A TAXI DRIVER
(Hindi/Gujarati) 70mins. (Without interval)
Designed & directed by Abhinay Banker
What if you have read a book or watched a movie and the story has kept changing every time? Something similar was proven by the first and the second shows of Abhinay Banker’s experimental bilingual play ‘An evening with a taxi driver’ that premiered at a festival in Ahmedabad recently.
Inspired from a real life event, the modern play that is a good mix of comedy, crime and romance stars Sanjay Galsar and Nikita Sharma and is able to take the audience on an entertaining ride despite ‘not being scripted’ as claimed by the director who says they rehearsed for what not to do on stage to keep the element of freshness intact in the performances.
The satire on road safety reminds you of how ‘trouble never comes alone’ while touching upon the subjects of corruption, class consciousness and homosexuality in the first show and love, marriage and divorce in the second show gaining much applause from the audience. The car where the whole play unfolds is well-designed and gives you a feeling of being on the road with a projector showing the route map as visible on the driver’s phone.
